Back in 1665, Old Lyme, CT was just another part of newly-formed Lyme, CT. But in 1855, after around 200 years, the southern part of Lyme grew bored with being just plain Lyme and split off to become South Lyme. This name grew stale quickly, and South Lyme was renamed Old Lyme just two years later, in 1857. Presumably, residents became excited when finding out that South Lyme contained the oldest-settled portion of the various “Lymes”, and could hardly wait to change their name again. Old age does not excite everybody, but who are we to judge?
